I'd never seen the underbelly of a starfish in its natural state before our nature walk and beach trek in Ketchikan. This was one of about six or seven varieties that had been stranded by the tide on this little black "beach". Within a few hours the tide would be back in to offer them a lift back out to sea. Fascinating.
