Two Carriages of Kindercare

These nice folks from Kindercare have been with us for the last couple of days to have their regional meeting. Nice group - we're having a good time with them.
And they know how to do the town right by having both Boomer AND Sarge pick them up for a carriage tour before dinner at Joe's Bistro. We dodged rain all day but they were troopers and hung in there. They're still not back from dinner though... hope they make it to breakfast.

The Trolley House

Back in the day, the trolley (originally horse-drawn) figured prominently in public transportation on the island. Not only did it ride throughout the downtown area - including right past our house - but it went out to the beach as well. Transportation options were few; unless you had enough money for a carriage or a horse, most folks walked everywhere, so the trolley came in handy. In fact, even in later years cars were a rarity, so much so that when there were only two cars on the island they got into a wreck outside the Palace Saloon. This little rental house was familiar to the rest of the locals because it was the ticket office for the trolley. Just above the window you can see a medallion. When you walk by be sure to take a closer look because you'll see that it's in the shape of a trolley. These days we have Polly the Trolley for tours around the island but the public transportation life of the trolley is long gone.

Nice Day for a Jet Ski Ride

Looks like these folks are probably headed over to Cumberland Island for some wild horse spottin'. Jet skis are not allowed to land on Cumberland but the drive-by is still nice.

50 With Attitude

This must be the year for all of the cool women to turn 50. Witness this fabulous group that checked out today. Just like last week's group, Denise, Susan and Ann attacked the milestone properly - by celebrating Amelia Island style. In fact, these ladies had such a great time at the Ritz Carlton spa yesterday that I went over and had my lashes tinted today. Really beautiful facility. Good taste, ladies. Happy birthday.

On a Flower Kick

There are so many pretty flowers out right now that I can't help but point my camera in their direction. I never get tired of them. I hope that you don't...

Pretty Garden Visitor

This lovely butterfly was showing his (or her...anyone?) appreciation for our new drought-tolerant gardens today. I found that a happy bonus to xeriscaping is that most of the plants that we've used would be natural selections for a butterfly garden. Now that the new gardens are blooming well, we're attracting our unfair share of butterflies and hummingbirds. Less water, more beauty; I believe that's what they call a win-win situation.

Her Pots Runneth Over

One of my favorite houses, the Easter Egg Cottage (my name for it), has so many flowers in the yard that the owner has finally decided to make a new garden on the sidewalk. Good idea; arrange the pots any way that you want and then change the whole garden tomorrow.

Pretty Entry

This house three doors down from us actually has two entrances and I only look at the one on Seventh Street. Just for the heck of it I walked around the block the other way and just noticed how pretty their other entrance looks after their new paint job. Take a new route tomorrow; you never know what you'll see.

Heavy Metal Cats

Or maybe light metal cats but they make me smile anyway. In fact, almost everything at Patricia Ezzell's gallery makes me smile. Lots of whimsy, bright colors, fun pieces and a happy little house for a gallery; what more could you want?

Jumpin' With the Girls

We had a particularly wacky group of girls all celebrating their 50th birthdays this weekend and, since this is my big year too (I'm the oldest in the group), I was invited to join in the traditional jump.

On closer inspection you'll see that it wasn't me, but a serial killer in a wig. What the? I guess I was pretty excited to take part. Can't explain the hair...Thanks for the memories ladies.

Whitby Quinn

These locals did a nice concert on Centre Street this afternoon featuring songs from their new cd "She's Gone". I enjoyed it very much. If you'd like to take a listen or buy their cd (I am), here's their website where you can hear the first four tunes. Pretty catchy.

Technical Solution

Just figured out how to blog again. I've been unable to upload photos all week but I just figured out that I'd reached my maximum number of photo albums so now I'm just adding to existing albums. Not that you care about any of that but I thought that I'd document my solution in case I need it again and I've forgotten...

Starfish Anyone?

I always enjoy this display of sea creatures for sale in front of Corner-Copia on Centre Street. This is the same shop with the koi "pond" out front blogged about previously.

Saturday Farmers' Market

I've been experiencing technical difficulties for the past several days in uploading photos so I've left the blog dark. So sorry. In fact, the technical difficulties haven't gone away but I figured out a work-around that I'm hoping will lead me to greener pastures overall. (That means that I hope I'm onto something.) In the meantime, please enjoy scenes from this Saturday's farmers' market.

Marmaduke?

I'm told that these two pups were from a litter of seven. Wow. That's a lot of dog to feed. In fact I was concerned that these two would be eyeing up this little girl as a nice snack. Not to worry, they turned out to be quite the gentle giants and were just another photo op on Centre Street.

Guard Goose

Well attired and guarding another pretty porch in town. Home of an artist. Can you tell?

Cyndi and Boomer

Two of my favorite beings on Amelia Island. Every time they walk, stroll or prance through town they elicit quite a reaction from everyone on the sidewalk as they pass by. I aways hear lots of oohs, ahhs and "I want to pet the horsey". And that's from the adults. Boomer is such a celebrity that he's even got a book now. I recommend that you buy it from Cyndi because Boomer isn't as good at counting change. We'll be happy to arrange for a private carriage tour for you right from the inn. FYI our Romance Packages go on sale starting today if you're still looking for a romantic summer getaway... Be a hero; add the private carriage tour.

We Like Our Trees

We have a fairly good tree ordinance in the city now with appropriate restrictions for cutting down trees and fines for those who don't comply. But we've respected our trees around here for quite a bit longer than the tree ordinance has been around. If there's a good tree where we need a parking lot, the tree gets to stay; witness this 150+ year-old oak tree in the lot at Fred's. I've looked at it for so long that I'd forgotten that it might be unusual to some. I like living where it's the norm.

Sod the Dock?

I have no idea why there is a piece of sod on the dock. Lots of boaters come in with dogs. Maybe the dogs think that if the boat is a house, the sod is a park?

July 4th Impressions

Big flags.

Little flags.

Flags on windsocks.

Flags on hats.

Flags on buildings.

Flags on people.

Still keeping an eye on the Brits...

British Invasion

Brits, Des and Gill are two regular Fairbanks House guests who are apparently trying to re-take America on this Independence Day weekend, or at least Amelia Island. Actually, they're just enjoying a nice bottle of wine while they wait for the sunset at Brett's Waterway Cafe on the river. I guess that they've learned, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Getting Ready for the Fourth

Most of the boats in the marina had their colors flying tonight getting ready for the big Fourth of July weekend. This one caught my eye as having a particularly nice view getting ready for sunset too.

Free Wine Tasting Today

And every day at Fernandina Beach Winery and Gifts. They specialize in Florida fruit wines of all different flavors and they're happy to offer samples of same. We've personally tasted Category Five Sangria, thanks to some wonderful Fairbanks House guests (thanks Ernest and Amy) and we'd encourage everyone to give it a try for something different. It's free...
